Cavan Flynn
PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
Cavan Flynn is an award winning Australian photographer based on the Gold Coast, Queensland. His journey began in the gritty environment of newspaper darkrooms, where he started as a junior photographer, learning the technical side of photography through film. Though he mastered the craft of 35mm, 120, and panoramic 6×17 film, it was the experiences of travelling and working with some of Australia’s top newsrooms and brands that truly sharpened his creative eye.
Cavan’s portfolio spans a diverse range of subjects, from advertising photography to dynamic lifestyle shoots, with clients that include major Australian developers and international brands. He is also known for his fine art photography, which reflects a deep love for the natural world. His upbringing in Australia and extensive travels have given him a unique gift for capturing the essence of place, with a distinct and authentic vision.
Shooting with Nikon and Hasselblad cameras, Cavan’s work is distinguished by its ability to blend technical precision with an organic, raw beauty. His commercial and editorial work has been widely published, and he is a regular contributor to Bond University as their Senior Photographer and Visual Content Producer. International
PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS
Earlier this year, Cavan’s long-exposure photograph of Flynn Sweeney, an Australian BMX champion, earned him an International Gold Award at the CASE Circle of Excellence. The shot, which was intended to raise awareness of Flynn’s journey to the BMX World Championships, became a showcase of technical brilliance and creativity. By using sparklers to create a dramatic, dynamic effect around Flynn’s spinning BMX wheel, Cavan produced a visually stunning image that captured widespread media attention. The photo also became a talking point across national radio.
In 2022, Cavan took home the top prize at the CASE Circle of Excellence, Best of Asia-Pacific Awards for his striking portrait of Dr Patrick Corrigan AM, a renowned businessman and one of Australia’s foremost art patrons. Captured in the SBS television studios in Sydney, the photograph masterfully framed Dr Corrigan in front of a backdrop of his own collection of Indigenous artworks. Cavan’s skillful use of light and angles highlighted both the subject and the vibrant cultural context, creating a visually arresting piece that resonated with the judges. Originally featured in The Arch magazine, this image underscores Cavan’s ability to weave narrative and artistry into his photography.
